Hi! I’m Ian Renton: code-monkey, net-junkie, UX designer and robot-tinkerer.

Eric, Joseph and I in Galicia, Summer 2010

I live in the seaside town of Bournemouth, England, with my wife Eric and son Joseph. I enjoy programming, reading, writing, cooking, sailing, martial arts and spinning things that are on fire.

I have a BSc in Physics from Southampton University and now write software, as well as occasionally dabbling in electronics and network administration, in the defence industry.

I’d like to be able to speak Spanish fluently, and to have a garden to grow vegetables in. Also, a big pile of money would be nice. Just sayin’.

Professional Stuff

I am currently the lead developer of a software package for naval autonomous vehicles at a major UK defence contractor. My software work encompasses both the embedded control logic and expert systems for vehicle control, and the front-end user interface for vehicle mission planning and evaluation.

I have experience in the design and implementation of other defence solutions such as submarine communications, mine countermeasures and naval Command and Control systems.

My role encompasses the entire project life-cycle, from requirements analysis and costing at the bid stage, through design, implementation and testing to on-site trials and customer acceptance.
