Story
Last time, on Dungeons and Dragons...
The session begins with the Earthborn King and the PCs having stepped outside his throne room, ostensibly in search of Lord Granite – but they have discovered themselves surrounded by guards who are no longer loyal to the king.
Outside the Throne Room
The soldiers are only there on orders to capture and imprison the King, and just tell the PCs to leave. The King is fairly resigned to it and will go with them, but you can tell he’s planning something. If the PCs’ weapons are drawn, then… the fight begins.
If the PCs choose to let the King go, he will be taken to the cells where the PCs can later fight their way down and find him – in a cell near Ailsa (who remains unrepentant). If the PCs choose to fight, the King will implore that there are too many enemies; the PCs will eventually be subdued and imprisoned alongside the King.
As the King is taken, the guard captain reaches into the flames on his head and removes a golden crown that was hidden within. The King’s fire looks diminished.
In the Cells
If the PCs are imprisoned or if they have fought their way down, they can talk to the King and Ailsa in nearby cells. The King is amused that by deposing him, Lord Granite has removed the only one with the ability to stop the “infection” of green-ness. He has anticipated the panic to come as it spreads, and that they will inevitably come back to the King for help.
“Wait but an hour,” he says. “They will realise their mistake.”
But an hour passes, then another. The baking-hot stone walls of the cells are getting cooler and mossy. The King has had enough – he needs his crown back, or the Queen will have “won this round”.
Seeds or other means used to escape from the cells. Characters emerge into mossy, abandoned corridors. They make it outside, and shit’s gone all Nausicaa. With more panic/wonder in the streets.
On the Hunt
The King can trace the faint energy signature of the crown – it’s headed off over a bridge into the lava tunnels, via one of the other bridges. A short way inside the lava tunnels, the guard captain and his men are trying to hack down a dense mass of tree trunks that has blocked their way.
Stabby time ensues.
Guard captain has the crown, King puts it on if allowed. Taunts Ailsa? – she was not given instructions for what to do in this circumstance.
King returns to the palace, aiming to reverse the forest damage. Others hopefully accompany.
End session.
